As long as it is out f the wind it should not be a problem. I'd be more concerned for predators. Temperature he can handle.

It seems like if I'm having to forcibly move him from coop to prison cell daily I'm going to really freak him out and teach him I'm his enemy, am I not?

I'd leave him there all of the time.

"Prison cell" is a construct in your own mind, not his. But the others are right. He can stay in the crate all the time. If you're concerned about his comfort, can you move his crate into the coop at night, and put it back outside during the day (out of any wet and wind, of course)?
