Hmmmm...not sure if he got an infection from somewhere or if it's inflammed from injury. Either way, the pain reliever is a good thing.
It won't hurt to offer him some cut up cherries daily, just in case there's some gout. A vet might be inclined to also try Metacam for the inflammation (it's a prescription med, not over the counter).
So,
Avia Charge to bolster him nutritionally.
Get him off layer food and onto game bird maintenance or other roo suitable food.
Cherries.
Continue with pain reliever.
See what vet thinks about Metacam (since you've already had him to the vet they should be able to prescribe via aphone call and not need you to bring him again).
I guess the vet didn't think there was an infection, or he/she would have prescribed antibiotics.
