This is how I found him this morning and the coop is sealed up tight, and there was nothing in there before I close them up and nothing in there now, so it had to have happened in the afternoon, and I didn’t notice it because he was faced the other way on the roosting pole I don’t even know.

Has the bleeding mostly stopped? Do you think it was a hawk, raccoon, dog, or?? I would keep the chickens inside the coop and run today. Is it covered? You may want to use a game camera to see what is outside today since they may come back. Check out all of your hens as well. Is the floor dirt where something could have dug in?

Do you know which bone is sticking out? For wounds you can use chlorhexidene/Hibiclens and water to dab or spray on wounds. Or saline, or wound spray such as Vetericyn can be used. Then apply plain Neosporin or triple antibiotic twice a day. Trim away feathers that get into the wound. Keep separated so the others don’t peck the red or his wounds for the time being. A wire dog crate with food and water, but left in the coop so he can be with them is best.

I bought them inside for cleaning them up. I don’t know if I should take him back out or keep them in the kettle inside because it’s in the teens right now. There’s no bone sticking out, but it looks like some meat is ripped out.

In the few minutes minutes, he was outside before I noticed it because it literally can only be seen from one side. It’s like the blood and meat. It was about 12° so I’m not sure I should take him outside when it’s not gonna go above freezing today. IMG_6431.jpeg IMG_6432.jpeg

He will be okay inside for now, but he will be happier in the hen’s presence in a day or two. That will give you time to assess his wounds. Treat him for shock with a cup of electrolyte or water with a tsp per cup. Then offer some watery feed, his usual feed, and a bit of egg. Keep us up to date on how he is doing. More pictures of his wounds are welcome.

I hate keeping him away from his ladies cause I know he’s already upset about that, but I’ve really don’t feel good about him being outside with these temperatures and the injuries plus he might be the reason the other three are still alive
There’s no way anything could’ve gotten that coop and I check every square inch including corners before I close it up at night every single opening to the coop is completely covered with double hardware cloth. Nothing can get in there and I would be able to tell if it did, and I had happened before last night I saw blood around the run in places he had not been in this morning

What type of fencing is covering your run? If it is chicken wire or larger wire than 1/2 hardware cloth, raccoons can reach threw it and pull chickens through it. It will come back, so you may need to make some adjustments or move the hens to a safer place temporarily.

I would not recommend BluKote on wounds since it is more for scrapes and mild cuts, and it can prevent us from seeing the wound for any signs of infection. I do use it for mild injuries, but saline and Neosporin are best for deep wounds.
