We have a 10 month old rooster and just last night we noticed all the skin on his face a dark purple colour. Went to grab something inside and by the time I went back out to the chickens it was pretty much turning back to red before my eyes. Next morning it looked more purple again. He has gotten some bad frostbite in Dec (which can also be seen in the pic at the tips of the comb) but we’ve figure how to prevent it from happening again and it hasn’t flared up again since. I didn’t think the colour change this time would be frost bite as it’s been a lot warmer and we’ve mitigated the previous frostbite risks. Also this time it goes from purpose to red and back to purple. He’s eating and drinking fine, cockadoodledooing, mounting the ladies, and attacking our feet so doesn’t seem to be acting strange. The droppings below where he roosts seemed normal colour /consistency. Also we are in Ontario and I believe it’s not easy to access meds. Thank you for any advice!!

Wow! That's a lot darker than I thought. My roosters combs go light purple when it is going to rain, but during the rain they are red.
Is he showing any other symptoms?
Gasping for breath, snotty nose, bubbling eyes? Anything unusual?

Nothing out of the ordinary at all in terms of symptoms. He’s the only chicken whose face has changed colour (no hens have) and it’s the first time it’s happened.

He looks like he has significant frostbite on his comb, wattles, and earlobes. It probably won’t change much until the tissue sloughs off in a few weeks. It will become more rounded off. Does he have a coop to get into at night out of the wind and rain? Good overhead ventilation without a direct draft is good. Moisture causes frostbite.

They do have a coop that stays a pretty good temp and lots of vents at the top. He’s had frostbite on his comb and chin this winter and it’s in the slow healing process but we deduced the prior frostbite to his face touching the water while drinking and the cold metal feeder, both issues have been addressed and no one has gotten any new frostbite isince. However, the reason it seemed odd to be frostbite to me this time is that the colouration has still been changing from more purple back to normal red and then back again over the last few days. Unless he’s very sensitive to it now!!? Or maybe there is extra moisture outside from the spring melt. Today he was less purple. Hopefully it’s on the mend he was still very roostery today
