I have a three-year-old Mille Fleure D’uccle rooster that four days ago I noticed was just staying in a nesting box. On the second day he was in there again I lifted him up and put him down and he had some balance issues but was walking around. I brought him in and as the day went on did eat A bit on his own and drink water. As the evening went on he grew increasingly more weak to the point where he couldn’t lift his head and wouldn’t eat or drink. When I would lift him up he would basically just be limp. I didn’t think he’d make it through the night but he did so I took him to the vet the next morning. The vet thought it might be a gastrointestinal issue. His heartbeat was extremely slow and weak and we figured he would not make it through the day. But the vet gave me some Tylan and wanted me to treat the whole flock as a precaution. I did not do that because I don’t want to give my chickens unnecessary antibiotics and not any other chickens were showing any signs of sickness. So I treated the Roo to the antibiotic and gave him more vitamins and electrolytes. Pretty sure he wasn’t going to make it through the night. Well today he is alert and eating and drinking on his own however he cannot really stand up or balance himself. I also had given him some Corid The second day figuring it couldn’t hurt. I have not given him any more Corid but maybe I should? Any clues as to what might be going on with him? I’m hoping it’s not something neurological seems how he can’t stand or walk. Hoping it’s just him being weak and needs to get strength back.

First you shouldn't give meds like the way you gave Corid.
It does no good.
Give the full treatment or give none at all.

Nutri-Drench may help perk him back up.

What exactly do you feed your flock?
Any new birds recently?

I put him on Corid the 2nd day that he was exhibiting signs of coccidiosis in my mind. I feel like that is a chance worth taking and from my feedback from other Chicken forums, it certainly couldn’t hurt. I only discontinued the Corid as my vet didn’t think that was what was going on and wanted to put him on the Tylan.

I also had him on an Electrolyte Vitamin supplement. All my flock gets Purina Layena complimented with lots of fruits and veggies from time to time. No new birds.... no one else is sick.

Good news is today he took a wonderful turn for the best. He is alert, eating and drinking on his own, crowing and walking...albeit a little clumsy still. I definitely think there is a bit of neurological damage. He kind of shakes his head a bit.

I almost am beginning to believe he had a little stroke!

At any rate, it is night and day how much he improved today!

I'm glad to hear he is improving.

Give him the complete course of the Tylan as prescribed by your vet.
Did they perform a fecal float to look for parasites?

Also check his ears for any debris, infection or mites. The loss of balance is concerning and can be a sign of a neurological disorder. Have you added any new birds recently?

No, he literally was at deaths door. I wasn’t even going to take him to the vet because I didn’t think he would live out the day. The vet figured he would be gone within a couple of hours so there was no fecal. I basically just took him to the vet to make sure it wasn’t viral and if I should be concerned for my other chickens.

He seems to be almost fully recovered!! He is crowing and walking around almost like his old self! Even started pecking at me again....little guy has always been a butt to me....LOL! He doesn’t seem to care that I was holding him to my chest and crying my eyes out thinking he was a goner. That’s gratitude for ya!
