I am new to this forum so Hello to everyone. I have 5 barred rocks, 4 of which are roosters. All are 6 months old and very healthy. I had to separate all but one of the roosters from the hen as advised by the gentleman who provided me with my chicks. Hen is an excellent layer. Here is my problem, I have the other roosters in a separate pen, separated by each other with 1/4 inch wire dividers. One morning I went out to feed and water and one of my roosters had a closed eye. There was no sign of injury and no swelling of the eye itself. It was just closed. I saw no gooey or crusted material around the eye at all. I gently opened his eye to look at it, and it appeared to have a whitish film over it. I gently flushed it with warm water and hoped for the best. It is still closed with no signs of infection and I don't know what it could be. He is in otherwise excellent health, eats well, moves around fine, but the eye remains closed. I have had no luck online finding any answers as to what this might be, and I have had trouble locating a verterinarian that treats poultry in my area. Although he is healthy, I am concerned about this. Prior to this both of his eyes were just fine. I even contacted Cornell University Veterinary Diagnostic Center with no luck. Any ideas or suggestions? I would appreciate it. Although I can only let them free range when I am out with them, they have large pens that are kept clean and dry.
I share my life with, 3 dachshunds, 1 dwarf/lionhead rabbit/ 3 cats/ 5 barred rocks, and 5 java chicks, and of course my husband.
