Rooster with Hen for Fertile eggs

I have read that a hen can lay fertile eggs for up to 3 weeks after breeding with a rooster. However, I had a California White hen who laid fertile eggs for just over TWO MONTHS!!! I didn't have a rooster until Mid-November, and I got my hen from my mom's house (where she was with a rooster) in August- I saved eggs from her for 2 weeks, then set them in the incubator in November, BEFORE I got the new rooster- Those eggs made it to day 14 (yes, 14) before my temps dropped and killed them.

That hen, Christine, also laid 13 to 14 eggs before missing a day of laying, laid for 2 years, and had a great personality. A coyote got her at the end of November- I really liked her alot.

Or you could just get eggs off someone local, buy eggs off here or ebay. That way if your hen/hens go broody you can get some eggs for her without having to deal with the rooster hassel.....
