rooster with possible impacted/sour crop. help.

Mo's culture came back positive for three strains of e coli and Kluyvera and he has been on the best antibiotic for this for 6 days today's dose will be 7 and there's not really any marked improvement in fact today is the worse that he has been. We bought crickets and wax and mealworms at the pet store which he was really interested in but not much today he is so skinny. He hates being tubed for pedialyte and his antibiotic and also with formula. He had been eating some but we ought his beak was discouraging him as his top beak has grown so we clipped that successfully without blood last night. Too little too late? We are really sad his girls are missing him. We think if he doesn't perk up by tomorrow afternoon we are going to have him put to sleep. We don't want to do anything premature but tubing him this morning just made us feel like we can't do it to him anymore. He is a beautiful sweet rooster and he shouldn't have to suffer for our reasons. We do love this roo like a crazy amount. This is not an easy choice. Does anyone agree or disagree with us?

Awwwww I was hoping he would have turned around. What kind of antibiotics??if it means anything I tube fed my hen for about a month before I stopped. Although she improved after I started giving her baytril after day 3. My first round of antibiotics...they were some type of sulfa drug, made her worse!! I stopped those and took her to another vet for baytril. Can you mash up grower food/pedilyte/probiotics in a blender and try giving him food that way?? Maybe the baby fird food isn't settling well.

As for your timing....only you know when it's best. He's your sweet guy, so only you and your family can make that decision. There was a time I felt so discouraged about my hen I was ready to take her to the vet and put her down and my husband told me lets just keep trying for a couple more days. I'm sure glad I did. :hugs whatever you choose you know it will be the right decision for him.

There are some diseases out there that will emanciate a bird. The e-coli could be a secondary infection. Mareks is one that comes to mind. Lymphoid leukosis is another. I hope he makes it.

We put our much loved rooster Mo to sleep tonight. He had not improved in the week he was on baytril actually got worse. He was able to spend some time outside with his girls and ate some apple but wouldn't touch anything else and wasn't drinking much water. I don't know if the impacted crop started all of it or if there was something underlying... I'm thinking the latter but we will never know. All I know is he was a great, beautiful, sweet loving guy and we and his girls will miss him dearly. We weren't able to paint the coop before winter but we decided we are going to paint it in honor of him with white, green, black, orange and brown and label it Mo's Girls. I can't believe how hard it is to say good bye to a chicken but he became so much more than that he was family and now he doesn't have to suffer. Thank you all so much for your support I'm so glad I found backyard chickens.
It's a sad night in bird town.. As my boyfriend and Mo's good buddy Bill would say (last night Mo went and laid on his chest because he wanted to). Boy we are gonna miss that roo:(
