Rooster???

I was wondering weather its a good idea to have a rooster in with my hens and couldn't decide because i have heard good points from both sides of the story.

What do you think???????

It depends on what you are looking for. If you want fertile eggs and a flock protector, a rooster is what you need.

If you want quiet and/or more of pet, I would not recommend a roo. Sometimes a roo can be sweet, but more often then not they do not have the same pet quality temperaments.

Fertile eggs have no nutritional difference or taste.

Roosters can be rough on hens sometimes. If they over breed the hens you may have girls with bald patches.

A rooster is not needed for them to lay eggs unless you want to hatch your own. A rooster will protect his ladies but some are too aggressive and pull feathers and can be aggressive towards you. I don't haven't had any roosters in a long time. I like sleeping in sometimes.

I didn't want a rooster at first, but i have really enjoyed having one. I never realized the difficult job they have with finding food for the girls and calling everyone over to try it, then every day taking different hens into the coop and showing them all the right spots to in which to lay eggs. After that he has to watch the skies constantly for any hawks, and then give his "alarm" sound. If anyone gets into a scrap, he rushes over and settles it very quickly. They are handsome too, and I love to here them crow. We like to hatch eggs in the spring. I once had an aggressive rooster who didn't live very long, but since have had several nice fellows.

I just got a rooster today and added him in while it was dark and the hens were sleeping so we will see how it goes in the morning.

You'll have to tell me how it goes! I got my first rooster - he will be 12 weeks this coming Monday (24th). He got a little attitude, but I fixed that up. If you have any questions on that, feel free to PM me or ask here!
