Hello All. My name is Logan from Ithaca, NY area. My sister hatched some chickens for my dad who never found the time to build a coop. I had the time so now I have 10 chickens. Some of them appear to be pure black australorp's the others are mixes or something else. Below are a few pictures. I am pretty sure I have 5 hens and 5 roosters but am having trouble identifying the roosters.

This first picture is speckles. He/She is the only one that looks like this out of the 10. I am leaning towards rooster do to his/her size.

Here is all 10 - 12 week old chicks crammed into one nesting box to sleep. They keep doing this and I will need to block it off so they start using the roost. The white one is Thelma or Louise. There are two of them and they are identical to me. Both I believe are hens.

No name - Possible rooster?

(L) No name, possible rooster. (R) Possible Hen named Copper Bottom.

A bit fuzzy because my camera isn't working well. I believe this is a rooster

Speckles and No name. Both roosters?

No name again.

I forgot to mention I did read the section about the saddle feathers but I am not really sure (or don't want to believe) that I have multiple roosters. I like all 10 of them and they get along well but the extra roosters are going to have to take a trip to Antarctica.

Sorry about that. On my computer you can click on them and they enlarge. Maybe I did something wrong? I am very new to this and posting from a tablet so it is possible.

they all look like mixed breed birds to me.

Yes I only took pictures of the ones I was questioning if they were a pullet or cockrel. I have two hens and another that I am pretty sure is a rooster that appear to be pure Australorp. I will find my other camera tonight and try and get some better pictures. They are all still getting used to me so it is hard to get close for pictures.

Here is the response I got from my sister on what the other breeds are that these are mixed with if that helps with telling their sex.

barred rock
columbian wyandotte
buff columbian wyandotte
Black Australorp

I didn't see your comments in red before. Thank you for the help I really appreciate it. Unfortunately they seem to all be roosters. I am guessing it is the shiny feathers and pointed saddle feathers. I was hoping otherwise.

I agree that 1& 7 look like roos. But I have 5 definitely female Australorps and they look like yours. They can be tricky because both have full combs and waddles. They are beautiful birds. Are yours timid? Mine put new meaning to the word "chicken".
