Roosters Feathers Looking Like Fur

Hi all,

Does anyone have any ideas as to why a seemingly healthy, 3-yr-old Buff Orpington rooster's feathers would suddenly start looking like "fur"? He has no Silkie in him, and this wasn't evident until recently. Nutritional deficiency? Stress? Disease? Heat?

Did you worm him with fenbendazole, sometimes sold as Safeguard, while he was molting? Fenbendazole can cause weird feather growth if used during a molt.
