Rooster's lost crow

My buff orpington rooster had a nice crow in the morning. Now only a feeble gurgle comes out and when he's roosting at bedtime he makes a long drawn-out low whiney growl. Anybody have any ideas?

...only the thought that a rooster that doesn't crow alot/loud might be worth a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I'd love a roo, if it weren't for the racket!
