Roosters need less protein, how to feed them?

Roosters can't eat calcium
Because calcium makes their kidneys works.hard

But in very lil quantity like 0.3mg is fine occasionally very rarely

Roosters require calcium as well. Just at a lower level then hens in lay. If you completely remove calcium, you will within a few days see health issues and ultimately death.

It needs to be daily, ideally with every meal. The disparity is in the amounts.

I doubt that too much calcium is more harmful to roos than it is to chicks. Chick feed has about 1% calcium (layer feeds are generally 3.0-3.5%). So IMO if it's OK for chicks, it's OK for roos.

I have from going on 7yr old cocks down to year olds always been on layer pellets and still going strong and fertilizing. Y'all can beat that dead horse but you're just waiting money and time. To each thier own

I think assumptions are being made as to what causes health issues and sick are not compared to healthy birds (the dead horse). That is based on what is in this thread.

Umm chicks are growing birds so they need for muscle Devlopment but mature rooster didn't need that much but a lil they get from what they eat in treats like yoghurt and many other treats

I feed my whole flock (includes 4 roosters) Dumor chick starter/grower feed (20% protein) because it's low in calcium and cheaper than Purina Flock Raiser (also 20%). I mix it a big bowl with water into a slush, and they all love it and look great. If I could find a low calcium feed with a lower % protein, and of course cheaper, I'd use that instead.

We feed all our birds from two big feeders, one in the coop and one outside but under a roof. Our lazy rooster eats out of those, as do all the birds. And they free range around about an acre.

Will it hurt a rooster to eat high protein and calcium feed? Has anybody found an alternative? I can't imagine trying to chase him down and make him eat in a special place.

I use All Flock/Flockraiser for all hens and rooster and young pullets when being introduced to flock. I add a cup of calf manna, and place oyster shell in a separate container next to feed. They also get 1-3 cups scratch in morning (depending on cold) and a cup of birdseed with primarily black sunflower seed. I have 14 hens mixed types and 1 ameracauna rooster. I live in Raleigh, NC so have fairly temperate weather. Birds free range in day. You should not be using Layena with a mixed flock of males, females, and young and mature birds.
