Roosters

Quite honestly, I'm not sure what my rooster is. He is big and beautiful, that's for sure and was told he was a rock. I will take a pic and see if I can post it here. I'm new to this. Anyway, I incubate eggs to raise chickens for meat but I'm really getting into this chicken and rabbit thing. I also raise New Zealand White rabbits. My plan on the chickens was to keep a rooster from this breeding and dress out the rest. Then, I will mate him with the pure Giant Black Jerseys. I also have an Ameraucana in the mix I want to start a line of. So I would want to do the same there. Of course if I can just find one rooster of each breed I could buy locally, I would.

Here is one of my better barred rock cockerels.

Production type barred rock rooster 1st generation with BR #2 as the father.

Female offspring

Another female The girls had better barring than the males full grown. The males had a lot of leak-through. You can tell if your BR is pure for barring just by the colour.

2 copies of barring gene looks light like this rooster (hens only get one copy of the barring gene from their father, and it appears like this girl in behind).

OK, then mine is not a Barred Rock.

This is what I have.

I also have a gorgeous Wyandotte rooster. But he may soon be in the pot. All of a sudden he wants to attack me.

So your rooster puts you at step 2 of ridgerunner's plan. Your roo is already split for barring and will give half barred offspring and half non barred when put over a non barred hen.

Or, you can put him over your (I'm guessing eater egger) ameraucana hens and get those cute barred easter eggers!

I don't know why but a barred bird with muffs and a beard just looks so cute to me!

Mine are still at the age where their beards are just feathering out. I can't wait to see them fully grown :) I have almost 100% girls in the barred. I was really lucky. 80% of my last hatch appears to be girls.
