Roosting at a week old!

I am so proud of my girls! I put a few sticks in the brooder with them and they are already roosting! Here is a clever Barred Rock lady getting her balance perfectly

That is awesome!! I just put a wooden dowel in mine, about the same size of your sticks.......it's up about two inches off the ground....I don't think they've tried roosting yet. At this point, they use it for a hurdle.....and as a limbo!

That's awesome. I would recommend either a flat-sided board with the edges rounded over or a larger branch. Either will give them better footing. They tend to do better if they can sit fairly flat-footed with just their toes curling down around the roost. Of course, they probably don't care as much as we "experts" like to think they do. I have such a set up in my brooder and my 4-week old barred rock spent the night on the rim of the metal feeder. Ouch!

yeah I've had all sorts of different roosts set up for my chickies but all they ever want to sit on is thre railing of their hamster cage.

I have one of my week old bantams that prefers to roost on ME! Whenever I reach into the brooder to clean shavings out of feeders, or check the water, or whatever, as soon as I reach in, she comes running over, and jumps up on my hand. She just sits there "roosted" above all of her brothers and sisters sticking her little chicken tongue out at them

, because they haven't figured out how to jump and flap like her yet! She makes herself right at home, and starts preening. It's too cute!

I have another branch in there that is thicker too, I was giving them some variety Thanks for the advice though, I haven't built the roosts in my coop yet so that info will come in handy in the very near future.

haha I let mine roost on my finger, should probably get a stick into their cage shouldn't I.
