Also, just something to consider, you can build down from the rafters. Add wood to the rafters so you will have something to screw to then build a hanging roost out of the size wood you want.

Oh yes, that's also a possible idea. I tend to think from ground up, not the other way.

Two 40" roost should be fine for 4 birds.
I'd not put more than that in there anyway.
Screw a 1x4 on top of the existing roost bars...is what I would do.

Something like this, drywall screws countersunk.
Pack the screw heads with beeswax when done so they don't clog with poop.
