Roosting behaviour

I keep my new hens in a shed and have used a branch for a roost which is held off the ground by putting each end of the branch into a breeze block. The blocks are in each corner of the shed.

My question is, why do the hens roost in the corners on the blocks instead of on the branch?

I read another post that the roost shouldn't be near to the wall - why is that?

The huddle and roost where they feel safest. They won't roost in the dark out in the middle of the coop. They don't like to sleep in wide open spaces.

I have a rack with sewing threads on my wall. I woke up to find my chick out of her box and she had somehow gotten up on the top row of the threads (about 6 feet off the ground, but with chair and table which she most likely used to get there) roosting against the wall.

My first rooster and hen use to roost on a rake in the tool barrel until we fixed up the coop. lol. In the coop I have milk crates all tied together attatched to the wall, they just all snuggle up.
