roosting boxes in new coop

Do you line the tray with something or just fill it with litter?

I am using sweet PDZ on my poop boxes without putting any lining on them, the boxes are made with OSB and have a thick layer of latex paint. BTW I love this system (PDZ) because I am able to scoop the poop everyday (which takes me very little time) keeps the coop with no smells and the moisture way down.

Please can you explain what PDZ is. I'm a newbie too and would love more pictures of the insides of your coops. Also easy cleaning ideas. Thanks!!!

Oh! and this is Coco wandering in trying to figure out what is going on in her coop

In this pic you can see the PDZ in the box. I got it at the Tractor Supply Store

This is the back of my coop with the doors open, you can see the 2 roosting boxes. I was doing some elcetric work when I took the pics this afternoon so you can see the tools and the wire hanging. Sorry

This is a pic of one of the roosting boxes (I have 2 in my coop) They are removable, I used to put hay on them and then take them off the coop and dump them in the compost pile, I would do this every 4 days. Now with the PDZ I just scoop the poop with a cat litter scoop everyday and dump the poop in my compost pile (PDZ is OK to dump in the compost)

Wow what a great design. Thanks for sharing that!!! I definitely want to add that.

you are very welcome, also I want to add that a used to have rods in the roosting boxes but I changed them 2 days ago for 2x4s. I learned in this forum that it is better to have the 2x4s as roosts so the chickens can sit on their feet and warm their toes in the winter, specially when it is freezing outside.

I've read that too but I have read from many more people that they use 2x2's instead as they can still wrap thief feet on them but they are better than dowels. A lot of people said that they wouldn't be roosting on a flat surface in the wild therefore not to use a flat surface. One person said they put in both to try and the chickens liked the 2x2 better. We are changing ours tomorrow. What is PDZ????? How many chickens do you have?

Read up on this thread (same page) there is a link to PDZ. Yeah you are right 2x2 are good roosts I just want to use the 2x4 during the winter and I might change them to 2x2 in spring. All my others roosts (the ones in the run) are dowels and 2x2s.I have 9 pullets
