Roosting issues

I have a small flock of 12 chickens. They are about 4 months old.

I have a roost for them in their coop that is about 3-3 1/2 feet off the floor, but they don't use it. Instead they like to roost on top of a set of nesting boxes that have a flat top. The top of the nesting boxes is probably about 2-2 1/2 feet off the floor.

I have gone in during the evening and moved them to the roost I'd like them to be on but as soon as I turn my back they jump down and move to the top of the nesting box.

Should I care about this? Or just let them do what they want?

I do have about a hundred chickens, but they are not laying yet. So, here's a (sort-of) newbie's take on your question:

I would discourage them from roosting on the nesting box by putting something on top of it to prevent them roosting (like an additional roof that is sloped). My opinion is that when they sleep on all that poop that gathers, it is not as healthy as letting the poop drop to the floor.

I have read on this forum that in cold weather, a 2 x 4 turned so that the 4 inch side is what they roost on is good. Also to make sure they have a easy step up to the roost.
