Roosts and Windows

I saw your post on another thread. How far do you have your roosts from your poop trays and how big are your poop trays??

The boards are 24" wide with the roosts centered over them. The surface of the roost is 13" from the surface of the board. I find this height to work well to keep roosted birds from giving head shots to birds walking along the board trying to find a spot as well as giving me enough room to scrape under the roosts.

How far down

I have similar approach. I have double hung windows. In summer top and bottom are open to try and give them a little breeze.
Mine do seem to enjoy sitting on the roost and admiring the view.
Here they are at night. They all squish together but would complain if they had less space!

Thats how mine sleep, they have 4 feet of roosts in their coop now and they choose to sleep in the little 2 foot one we have connected

That’s how mine are! They have 4 feet of roost and all three of them decide to sleep in the little 2 foot connected roost

Windows at roost level are best but they should stay closed in cold weather. Then in warm weather when they're open, you can get a nice breeze on the chickens as they sleep, to help them cool off. My windows are at roost level and in the summer I even put a fan in one of the windows, to blow directly on the chickens. It gets really hot in the summer here and it helps them cool down.

Windows aside, you should have plenty of year-round, all-weather ventilation above roost level. Ideally 1 square foot per bird. Open windows are just an extra for the summer.
