Thanks Flying Monkey. I took individual chicks out of the brooder for a bit of fresh ground time. Most of the chicks did the bewildered stand in one spot, then start cheeping loudly and wandering aimlessly, looking for flock mates. Not so the RCBL. The minute her feet hit the ground, she took off on the run, in no particular direction, screaming at the top of her lungs!... so we'll see if they mellow out a bit. Where did you get your stock from? I have a dozen different directions I can head with a breeding program. I may just play around for a year or 2 with the stock I have, then invest in some nice quality hatching eggs for a breeding program. An other bird I was thinking of playing with for an auto sexing mix was Buckeye x Ameraucana. (or at least a sex-link)
Can you easily tell the difference between male and female RCBLchicks at hatch, or within the first week? One of mine has a band of white spots showing up in the wings. I think the white of that one's chipmunk stripes was also brighter. The other 2 have much more muted coloring in their feathers and stripe.
