In stead of cutting, I take one of the lower branches (still attached to the rosebush) and lay it flat on the ground. You are going to need one that is at least 2 ft long. At about the midway point, scrape the "bark" off the stem, about 3 or 4 inches. Coat this area with a rooting agent. Find something to hold the stem down on the round, rock, brick, or landscape fabric staples. Leave it just like this until next spring.

Come spring, cut the stem from the original rosebush. You should have a new rosebush ready to be transplanted.

Above post has good advice on starting cuttings, I will save that, havent tried it before. If youre talking about a transplant with roots and all that you replanted, dont give up on it, I did this with a dead looking bareroot rose this spring, all the others were coming back but this one, everyone said pull it out, but since it was a strong fragrance rose, I gave it another few weeks, and voila! It came back. Looked totally dead, even the small buds it had at one point were shriveled and dried. JMO....

When we moved to our new house I took cuttings from the climber. Planted them right away. Put them under a large glass jar. Left them there and now I have a climber over 9' high. Hasn't bloomed yet this year but will. Last year the rodent girdled it right down but it came back.

So is anyone willing to send me cuttings if I send them a priority mail stamp? If you took cuttings about 6inches long with some leaves still on. It would have to be a piece of last years growth, woody. Not soft green new growth. You could use a flat rate priority evelope. Wrap them in plastic with damp paper towels. About 12 pieces should ensure some survivers.

Anyone got old gramma roses? Just old ones your gramma grew. I've only got the one rose. I like the yellow and orange English roses and climbers.

Will post pics of my climber that I took from cuttings from and now deceased neighbor.. Not sure what it was called. She said her husband planted it 40 yrs ago but that was at least 10 years ago, so it would have been more than 50 years now.

Thezse are the same roses, but they are really producing this year, because of all the rain. I use to have some really gorgeous ones at our other house, wish I would have brought them with me. I love them, and they aren't nearly as hard to take care of as some other. My Avatar is Angel Face, which I had at our old house, and it is truly a lavender rose. Gorgeous colors! Love all kinds. These pics are of a climber we have on our wood fence.

Here's my "Double Delight" Jackson & Perkins hybrid tea rose, this bloom is from a couple weeks back. It's one of the most fragrant roses I have.

I just started trying to root roses last year. Seems the less I try, the better they root. I have a rooting box filled with sand and potting mix, about 75% sand 25% potting mix, I have it under a shade tree. After the flowers begin to fade on the bush I just take the cuttings from that stem. Depending on how long the stem was I can get 3 or 4 from it. I don't use any rooting hormone, just cut at an angle below a leaf bud and leave a set of leaves at the top. Poke it in the sand mix and water every couple of days. When I see new growth, I know its rooted, then I pot the cutting up in their own pots. I had read that roses were hard to root, but it has been one of the easiest plants I've tried.
