Rottweiler & Chickens

Thanks! He's a pretty goofy guy.

So far, baby steps with introductions, he's allowed to watch and has mostly stopped whimpering at them. Chicks don't seem to mind a big looming dog face and carry on as usual. Dog #2 got bored and left, so that's a good sign. Hopefully the chicks get more and more boring to the dogs as the weeks go by.

LOL! They're probably wondering why it's raining or does he not drool? That pic is too precious!

It really seems to all come down to individual temperament. My BFF and I got Mastiff puppies from the same litter. My boy is perfectly chill around the chickens. He may give them a sniff now and then (which usually earns him stink eye and a peck on the nose) but they just don't interest him. His sister on the other hand, who spends almost every day at my place while her people are at work, is OUT OF HER MIND about them. She shakes and whines and drools and paces. I had to put up a gate so she can't get to the top level of the yard where the coop is located (which my friend paid for).

BTW, if anyone wants to see the best dog in the WORLD around chicks and baby rabbits, check out Sharky the Pit Bull:

My pit is more afraid of the chickens then they are of him. While free ranging they will continually go within the reach of his line or walk right past him while he's off. They are more inclined to peck him then vice versa. We did raise our chicks as well as ducks inside with him in the house constantly. I think he got the idea that these are his pets too.

I have two Shiba Inu's and the male Yoshi can be in the fence{at least 100' x 50'} all day long with them but Miaka the female is a hnter to heart and will eat them any chance.. we keep her in the front yard and yoshi in the back when they go out..the chickens do fly the fence but never go in front as they can just sense it i guess...there are to hens that kinda tease Yoshi and he does chase them sometimes but they come back for more and i think its just a game for them..
and when i throw out scraps for them Yoshi try to get his share..and the rooster will try to keep between him and the food..

I have a pitbull and chickens. Whenever the coop is open, my pitbull always goes in it and eats all the chicken food and eats the chicken poop. Lol. My pitbull and the chickens (I got adults, teens, and little 2 week olds) get along perfectly. They mind their own business, except sometimes the chickens give my dog a peck, haha.

That's what my dogs need, a good peck on the nose! My female is doing pretty well, the male is a little obsessed and will NOT be getting an introduction for a bit. I know sometimes it is just not possible to coexist peacefully when mixing predators/prey but I really am going to give it my best.

Update, chicks are 10 days old. Female Rottweiler (Lucy) has decided that chickens stress her out so she will just remove herself to the hallway whenever I'm in the room where the chicks are staying. Male Rottweiler (Fred) is far less interested than he was. He can lay on the floor when a chick is out and leave it alone, with only occasional reminders to "leave it". If the chick gets too close to him he backs away. We've worked on this nearly every day. I am so proud of that meatball!
