Crowing
What about doing the simplest thing by separating him at night. Is that possible?

it is, but theres another thing. he normally starts pecking whilst everyones settling in, but once everyone is sleeping and everything and he goes to settle, he calms down. What about doing the simplest thing by separating him at night. Is that possible?
thank youUse words consistently, like NO! Chickens are very trainable.
How much space do they have in the coop when shut away? Just wondering what could be causing this behaviour, he sounds like a good roo the rest of the time.normally, he is an incredibly docile bird and doesnt show any aggressive behaviour, and normally very tolerant to baby birds except for the first 2 - 3 days of getting intorduced to them (he pecks them). It is normally at night he starts to peck the others. also, i thought it would be extreme for me to separate him, because it isnt pecking which is hurting the others or plucking feathers, just hard pecking. and he does not peck during the daytime at me at all.
100% agree. I believe that applies for any poultry. My duck used to peck really roughly and I taught her "gentle"---it worked within a couple days.Use words consistently, like NO! Chickens are very trainable.
i didnt know how to phrase it and if it sounded weird so i toom it away. i saw a pigeon do this as well, it was a very defensive pigeon, and when my chickens went near it, it started pecking in their direction, but not at them. sort of what my rooster did ONLY today (or maybe only because i caught him)The ‘pecking at the air’ comment makes me wonder…. I don’t know if this is normal.
not sure of the measurements but now that you mentioned it, im sure that this is the cause. it is kind of cramped, so we’re making another one. It is a big conservatory that they are free to roam in, but we put a box filled with hay in case they want to be in there, and they all get in there at night, maybe its warmer? they used to sleep on this wooden kind of bench. How much space do they have in the coop when shut away? I would suggest separating any broodies with their babies if he is at all rough with the chicks. That isnt uncommon for roosters, better safe than sorry
