We used 2 x 4 with the 4 side up, and they do gather a lot of poop. I just spent 30 minutes in the coop yesterday scrubbing poop off with bleach water and a rough sponge. It was not fun, and was very hot. I thought about switching to tree branches like a lot of people do, but how in the world do you clean poop off of bark???

i've seen suggestions that bark be removed, actually, as it makes a nice home for mites to stay in so they can creep up your chickens' legs at night. Blech.

I wondered about putting vinyl on the 2x4, but that might ruin traction. Maybe high gloss paint? Might make a less poo-binding surface.

I don't think they can poop on a round roost because of the way they have to sit on it, with the flat, esp. 4 inches, they could face anyway they wanted.

I'm new to all this, but I took 2 2x4's about 4' long and cut 45-degree angles on each end. One end was secured against the wall while the other was secured to the floor. I had room enough to space them 3 feet apart so it looked like a ladder leaning against the wall. I then took 3 tree limbs about 1-1/2 to 2" in diameter and fastened them onto the "ladder" as rungs. The chickens took to them immediately. I get cardboard boxes from work and break them down to put under the roost and cover it with pine shavings. Every week I slide the cardboard out and dump the leavings on the compost pile and replace it with clean litter.
