Round roosts are the most natural
When a perching bird's legs bend, the tendons on the back of the leg cause the toes to curl, so they can grip while being totally relaxed
i agree Wrooster - my 1st flock in spring 2014 will have 2" dia. natural branches for roosts.Bear Foot Farm is saying what I had always believed was true and backing it up with references. I've been hearing so many mentions of flat 2x4's lately I was looking to see how much support that idea has.
Gail Damerow is a respected author of barnyard reference books. She says "An ideal chicken perch is 2 inches in diameter for large breeds, 1 inch for bantams." She mentions using dowels. Nothing about 2x4's.
There were chickens before there was lumber. I'll stick with round.
