Because there are no instructions on how much to give chickens. It's probably a powder, but what concentration? 1%, 5%, 10%, 50%, 100%? What is the mg/kg dose of this drug?

Who knew deworming a chicken could be so complicated! This conversation has been a learning curve for me. And it's good info to have in case one of my birds come down with worms.

Hey @LaFleche I did a little digging to try to find flubendazole stuff in the US.

I'm all for using fish meds if you need to. The problem is - even in aquarium stores this stuff is rare in the US. I'm struggling to find it even listed in most of them and it's out of stock where it is. The only places I can find it in stock (like amazon) *do not give a concentration*. For example, on the page you listed it lists concentrations like 0.5%, 0.6%, etc. This determines the dosage. The fish meds, in the case of THIS drug, do NOT list that which I can find.

Then you have a concentration to work with to determine dosage. if the seller is right about it being 5% and not 0.5%, a much more common concentration...

I don't think anyone is denying that flubendazole is safe and works, or even that fish meds can be used sometimes (they're in my animal med kit for sure). We're just pointing out that it's a lot of effort to get off label and hope you have all the right info and take a risk on.... Or.... You can just get Safeguard horse dewormer for $10 from TSC, put it in some food, and have a HUGE margin of safety because it's really hard to OD safeguard in chickens which works just as well.

That is very strange. Of course one should never use any medication without knowing the exact and complete list of ingredients, including concentration.

And no, I would never advise to trust any random seller. Always buy original packaging.

Safeguard works almost as well and is often promoted here on BYC when it comes to deworming chicken. And of course I do not mind in the least which one a person uses.

By the way, just a short time ago on another thread concerning deworming questions some chimed in saying, that Flubenole 5% (Flubendazole) sure was available in the US and in the US often used in aquaristics. I had nor reason to disbelieve this statement.

Heck, LaFleche saw worm eggs in a poop picture I posted about something else!!! I'm learning to look at the entire picture now and look for things. I saw dry pox on a chicken once. I was proud of myself but, the young person wasn't happy and kinda freaked out. I would have been happy for someone to find that just by looking at the entire picture.
Oh well! As I see it, it's for the betterment of the chicken and for me too learn.
