Royal Palm color?

The one in the front in this photo reminds me of the tiny bit of black I'm seeing. Those are really neat looking birds.

So what will this mean if I get lucky and it's a hen. My tom is a Royal (black and white) and has produced Royals in the past before I got him. They will mostly be pets, but I would like to produce pure eggs if possible.

If its a Calico, then half the offspring will get one red gene and be calico and half will not get the red gene, and be Royal Palm. (I think it is a hen, by the way).

If its a sweetgrass, they will all be sweetgrass with a single narraganset gene. (The only difference between sweetgrass and royal palm is that royal palm have two narragansett genes, and sweetgrass don't have any. There is no red gene in a sweetgrass). Not sure if the single narragansett gene will express itself in any way or not. If you mate those poults to a royal palm, then half of their offspring will be royal palm again.

I really like omabird's dark sweetgrass.

Very interesting. Should be fun.

This is my tom. He is such a wonderful bird. Loves people. When I get calls from friends they always ask about Homer before anything else.

This is a close up of the feathers.

This is with some of my chickens for an idea of color. Most are buff in color, the young roo is a reddish color. He is a mix with a RIR hen and a buff roo.

This is again with the reddish roo (they are hatchmates)

They really are wonderful birds. I took in the tom and a young hen because they needed a home. I fell in love with them right away. I was crushed the morning the coons got the hen. They came the one night the electric fence quit working. They killed her probably less than a minute before we got out there. (We got five of them in the next few nights.)

The tom has been a very valuable addition. He loves people, free-ranges with the chickens and keeps the hawks away and he keeps the roos from fighting. Just a few days ago I saw a hawk swoop down after the ducks. After it changed course and flew off I saw how quickly the tom had reacted. He was right behind the ducks and fluffed up quick enough to send the hawk packing.

I'm guessing your young'un to be a Royal Palm/ Red Bourbon cross.

they'll start white & gradually start showing black at a month or so old.

This is deffinetly a Chocolate Palm. Its a variation of a Royal Palm. Royal Palm x Chocolate Turkey. And it is a hen. Note, femine head, small snood and not a large presence of a wattle and no enlarged caruncles.

Here is a website showing pictures of a Chocolate Palm. Chocolate Palms are a fairly new variety in the last 1-2 years.

P.S. Your hen has very nice color for a chocolate palm. Consider showing her? Best of Luck!

It is a cross but most likely a tri color. The dark normaly comes in between the wings on the back first. If it was pure it would not have color so far up the neck. BR cross is very possible. Chocolate is much darker and there is no black edge. I got my first chocolate palms by accident in a shipment of blue palm I ordered from Sandhill about 5 years ago.
