For what it is worth I have a pair of Ruddys and three hens in a 24'x45' pen with other ducks, i.e. mandarins, woody's, pintails and chiloe wigeons. This is my first breeding season with them and the only aggression I have seen has been from the pair towards the hens. I have removed the hens and have been watching them very closely because I have heard them to be aggressive.

that big pen that you built is only 24x25? it looks so huge! haha!
so with ruddies you dont have any fighting? I know someone that has ruddies that killed some of his runners....

When dealing with any birds the species can have general personalities but each individual bird is different we have had birds of certain species being calm and keeping to themselves with a pair of the same species attacking and chasing everything they were penned with alot depends on the individual birds. When trying a species know for being aggressive just keep an eye on them and if they start beind disruptive take them out.

Like I have said, no problems with my Ruddy pair except towards the other hens. I have been keeping an eye on them and will see what happens, the last thing we want is something to happen to our other birds. We were given the hens and decided to get a male, however we found out that they are monogamous after we got the pair, so that we were kind of stuck with these birds. Don't get me wrong, we love them, they make the neatest noises and are beautiful, but they may not have been our first choice due to their potential aggressive tendencies. We will see how the breeding seasons go.
BBB, on a side note, when you buried the bucket did you do it at an angle or did you bury it horizontal into an embankment? I hope that made sense.

either way works on the bucket nest. being all flate here, I just dug a large flat hole, left about 2 feet infront of the bucket open, then mounded the extra dirt over the bucket, worked great. If you made a mound, that would be good too. Just drill some holes in the bottom of the bucket for when it rains, that way it can drain off any excess and not flood the nest
