I got into a conversation with another chicken-keeper while at our local feed store today. She said she's been looking everywhere for baby chicks to buy & couldn't find any. Someone else told her about a place in Miami and she seemed eager to go, even though it would be a 4-hour round-trip. I asked her why she didn't just order from a hatchery, which would mail them to her local PO and sex them for her too.
Her reply was that these local breeders could also sex the chicks, and that hatcheries like MMH were hiring mere teenagers to do the vent sexing for them.
??!!?!?!?
I thought it was a highly-paid profession requiring a lot of training, skill & experience. She said she'd seen pictures on their website showing these young people at work at MMH. I cannot find such photos.
I'm curious to know if what this woman said is really true. And if so, where I can sign up my teenage son to get a job at a hatchery.
