Run and mud

Y'all are awesome! We have sand in the coop so sand in the run also makes sense. I was trying to give the girls fresh grass to scratch in but it took NO time before that was gone lol. Would you do the same maintenance on the sand in the run as you do in the coop? Use the same kind or a different bigger kind?

I have play sand in my coop. I don't remember why...I must have had it around. In the run, I use sand that is more coarse: construction sand, tube sand, or all -purpose sand. (those might all be the same;) My experience has been that the coarser sand drains better. The play sand (at least here in Ohio) packs down because it is so fine. Added bonus: the little pebbles in the coarse sand is the perfect grit!

I have pine shavings in the coop and straw in the run. The straw effectively soaks up most of the moisture. I'm in michigan, and like [steelchair] said, it's wet more often than not here. Straw also gives off heat when it decomposes so it's a good choice in cold weather/winter.

we have had a lot rain in the past week I put straw in my coop and run. I let my chickens free range most days. I figure the straw does two jobs keeps them from walking in mud plus something to occupy themselves scratching in the straw.
