Pine is perfectly safe. It's widely used by keepers of every sort of livestock both pet and commercial. If there were any issues with it at all the commercial users, who need to maximize productivity for every penny, wouldn't use it.
The people who claim that pine is unsafe are usually trying to sell you something else.
