Run Materials? Chicken Wire vs Hardware Cloth

I really appreciate all of the responses. We do have some dogs that roam here but all I have ever seen is the run of the mill old farm dog. The kind where you step outside and yell "Git!" and they wander off lol. We have a dog also but he is never unattended. Our yard is not fenced so he is either on a leash or on a tie out while we are outside. I think just having him and his scent around the yard does help deter some animals. I never thought about it before but we have not had an issue with mice since we got him. Living right next to a corn field, we have always had mice coming in the house around harvest time. Not anymore. I will look into an electric wire around the coop as well but we do have to keep costs to a minimum. I do plan on burying the fencing and having an apron as well regardless if we use chicken wire or hardware cloth.
