Maybe since it’s just for a few months, I lay a tarp down and put dirt/bedding on top

A tarp would probably work, but if they scratch that deep down, the tarp may eventually rip. You can always give it a try and see if it works.

I agree, a leaf blower would definitely help clean up the area when you're finished with it.
