Hey Everyone!
First time poster and new chick(en) mom here. I have six 1-2 week old chicks and need to get moving on getting a coop together for them. I keep coming across the term "chicken math" and wonder if, down the line, I may want to add a few more. So, with the future in mind, I'm looking at coops + runs that would house up to 10 or so chickens. I've read that per bird, I'd need 4 square feet for the coop interior and 10 square feet for the run. But if I plan on free ranging my chickens part time, does that change the amount of space I need? My idea is to let them free range (I have over an acre of property) when I'm home from work and I can supervise them. Otherwise, they'll be indoors. I don't want to overdo it with the size of the coop/run if I don't have to, but want to make sure I'm providing the girls enough space.
Thoughts of the experts in this community would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.
