Hey Everyone!

First time poster and new chick(en) mom here. I have six 1-2 week old chicks and need to get moving on getting a coop together for them. I keep coming across the term "chicken math" and wonder if, down the line, I may want to add a few more. So, with the future in mind, I'm looking at coops + runs that would house up to 10 or so chickens. I've read that per bird, I'd need 4 square feet for the coop interior and 10 square feet for the run. But if I plan on free ranging my chickens part time, does that change the amount of space I need? My idea is to let them free range (I have over an acre of property) when I'm home from work and I can supervise them. Otherwise, they'll be indoors. I don't want to overdo it with the size of the coop/run if I don't have to, but want to make sure I'm providing the girls enough space.

Thoughts of the experts in this community would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

I'm new here, but it is logical the more time outside the less room they need inside.

My answer is no, it doesn't change the recommended minimums. Life happens, stuff comes up... Plus a solid run is useful for bad weather days, or when you must lock up due to predators hanging around.

Since you mentioned chicken math, keep in mind that recommended minimums are just that - minimum. The more space you can give them above the minimum, the easier integration will be in the future, and the fewer behaviorial issues you'll need to deal with

Not really, because when they are confined they need the space.
Many variables like weather and predator load....which can change throughout the year.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Decided on a coop that has 36 sq feet inside and 100 sq feet outside in the run. Figure this is plenty of space, even with a few more and with letting them free range when possible.

Sounds OK.
Keep in mind your comfort in getting inside the coop to tend to the birds.

Oh, and...a belated Welcome to BYC! @CMcGrath71
