Hi All:

We are new to the chicken raising business and I have a question that I am sure will be basic to many of you.
We are converting an 8 x 10 shed into a coop and building a run. I read an article online on the Hartkeis website that recommended the Min Wax Spar Urethane.

So I went to Home Depot and spoke to the someone in paint and explained what I was looking for and showed him the type of sealant. We also wanted regular paint to coat the lumber and then the sealant.

He showed me a Behr paint and said I needed to let it cure for 72 hours and it would become food grade at that point. Then showed me a Varathane spar Urethane that he said would be the same. Then proceeded to tell me after the Behr paint cured I could apply the urethane and give it 72 hours and it would cure and that would become safe for the chickens.

So after 8 hours of building and painting on Sunday when I came to the office today I decided to call Behr and after telling the lady what I was told she was a bit taken back, apologized and told me she would refund my money for the pain and that the paint takes about 3 weeks to fully cure and is not safe for chickens. She told me they would be sending a rep over to that store to speak to them.

So here we are I have all the wood painted with this Behr paint and need to seal it. I called Varathane and they said they don't test on animals but they would not say it's safe for chickens.

Any help appreciated on what I can seal this painted wood with that will be safe for my chickens.
Thanks

Which Behr paint did you use? Most paints for outdoor use should be fine for chicken housing.

This is what was used. Think it is ok? Thanks

Uh-oh....... you might have inadvertently got someone fired. Poor guy was just trying to be helpful too.

I don't disagree with you BUT having said that, he should of not been so adamant about what he didn't know. I would of rather he say that he didn't know for sure what will work than tell me a story about paint fully curing in 72 hours. I mean where did he even get that number from.

Anyway I didn't give his name so I doubt he will have an issue.
Thanks

That paint will be fine as a stand alone. If you try to coat it with a urethane you might find that the latex paint bubbles or even melts under the urethane coat.
I use exterior latex on our coop and other animal buildings with no problem, I may have to give it a couple of more coats after a few years but you would have to do that with just about anything because of UV breaking down the coating. That store guy should get in trouble, nothing worse than incompetency in a sales person especially one that seems to just make up what they think you want to hear.

I’m thinking that the company is covering their butts incase your chickens get sick , I painted my entire coop with exterior water based paint and used odds and ends for details , I’ve yet to see any chickens eat the paint off the walls or doors ....

This is kind of like expiry dates on paper napkins ... what’s the worst thing that could happen ? They’ve thought of it ,

Really let it dry out and air out for a few days ... you’ll be fine
