Hi All:
We are new to the chicken raising business and I have a question that I am sure will be basic to many of you.
We are converting an 8 x 10 shed into a coop and building a run. I read an article online on the Hartkeis website that recommended the Min Wax Spar Urethane.
So I went to Home Depot and spoke to the someone in paint and explained what I was looking for and showed him the type of sealant. We also wanted regular paint to coat the lumber and then the sealant.
He showed me a Behr paint and said I needed to let it cure for 72 hours and it would become food grade at that point. Then showed me a Varathane spar Urethane that he said would be the same. Then proceeded to tell me after the Behr paint cured I could apply the urethane and give it 72 hours and it would cure and that would become safe for the chickens.
So after 8 hours of building and painting on Sunday when I came to the office today I decided to call Behr and after telling the lady what I was told she was a bit taken back, apologized and told me she would refund my money for the pain and that the paint takes about 3 weeks to fully cure and is not safe for chickens. She told me they would be sending a rep over to that store to speak to them.
So here we are I have all the wood painted with this Behr paint and need to seal it. I called Varathane and they said they don't test on animals but they would not say it's safe for chickens.
Any help appreciated on what I can seal this painted wood with that will be safe for my chickens.
Thanks
