Storm and Thistles padded away from Thunderpack's land. "Where will we go?" Thistles asked.

"I'm thinking about that," Storm replied. "I'm thinking we should take that Emeraldpack land that my pathetic parents took over about a moon ago. They never use it."

"What about me?" Thistles inquired, almost afraid to know the answer after Nikus had nearly killed her.

"You'll be my alpha female," he replied, licking her ear.

Nyx growled as she smelled her mate's scent. He was obviously still hunting. She felt a small twinge of resentment, remembering how Storm had left her on her own to lead the pack after falling into such a deep state of sadness.
"Storm?"

Thrush yawned, trotting into the Emeraldpack camp. Her brother was sitting in the shade, finishing up the fish he'd buried a few days ago. She laid down beside him to take a light nap. "Have you seen Nyx lately."
"There..." Night raised a paw. He squinted at Nyx's black shape. "But..."
Thrush's head shot up as Nyx came into the clearing. She was dragging Storm by the scruff in her jaws and looking close to passing out herself. Night ran up to their mother before Thrush could. "What happened?!" he barked. "Why--"
"It's Storm," Nyx gasped, dropping the he-wolf. "He's dead."

Thrush couldn't speak. Her mouth hung open slightly as she tried to understand what her mother had just said.
Night's voice cracked as he tried to speak, but he finally got his words out. "Who's going to be alpha male?"
