Jay's scent trailed off to a cave in Darkpack's territory. Voices drifted outside; one being the unmistakeable voice of Jay, and the other May. "I'm not" Jay said, from up ahead of May, not bothering to turn around to face her. "I see no point in fighting a prisoner; you are already beaten."
"You know that a wolf is not beaten until she gives up, or dies," she snarled, "and I will do neither."
"You are beaten when I say so, and I have said so," he replied calmly, sharing a few quiet words with another wolf.
"I never have, and never will be defeated by you!" May roared. She would have leaped for him, had she not been tied down. She still pulled at the ropes, but only rubbed her ankles raw, making them bleed.
"It won't do you any good," Jay snorted, flicking his ears impatiently.
"If you're so fearless, then untie me!" she thundered.
"To do what, May? Have a final show down? What good would it do me?" Jay growled, growing impatient. "I have you. You eat because I say so. You're alive because I say so. I have control over you."
"You never control me. Never have, never will. Only cowards resort to hiding and trickery. Why are you doing this anyway? What did I do to anger you so much when we were kids?"
Jay stepped on one of the ropes, jerking May's head into the ground and filling her mouth with dirt. "I have complete control over you, May," he said softly. "And with that, comes the control over Stormpack."
May spit out the dirt beside her. "Why, Jay? Why?'
"Why not?" he replied with a shrug, keeping his paw planted firmly on the rope and holding May's head down in submissive position.
