hi everyone, i was wondering whether my new run should just have chicken wire as a roof to expose the chickens to different types of weather such as snow, rain, and wind, of should the chickens be protected from the environment?

Mine has chicken wire over half and a plywood roof over the other half. But I live in sunny, Southern California. Mine is also 12x8x6. A very nice size for only six birds. If you have snow you may want something with a removable/replaceable roof.

My run has no roof. If you put on a roof, it will need to be able to support the snow load.

My chickens usually don't come in out of the rain. My coop sits off the ground, so they can simply walk underneath. Of course, they can walk up the ramp into the coop, if they want.

No roof makes it easier to throw treats into the run.

I believe that a slanted roof would keep the snow off. That is if the slant is big enough.

We are currently debating the same thing, and hubby has decided that we are going to make half of it with a roof above it, and half without. Our roof is more for shade, and we only average 4 inches of snow a year here.

my photo skills are lacking, the wire is 1/2 hardware mesh, and it's meshed in on the flat top of the roof as well
