i have a six-month-old runner duck who can't stand. She was looking off this morning, sitting off from the rest and didn't come to eat. Went to pick her up and she waddled into the kiddie pool. Went out to check on her and our drake was mating her. Then she couldn't get out of the pool. i picked her up and her legs were straight back. Brought her into the house and she laid there for a while then stood up. But now back down and can't stand. Her neck seems wobbly. She is not eating but is putting her beak in the water dish. i can't tell for sure if she is swallowing.

Searching here it looks like possible botulism. i put about 1-1/2 Tablespoons of Epsom Salt into 3 cups of water. She's been dipping her beak, but again, not sure she is swallowing. i read that charcoal can help. What is the dosage and where does one get that?

Any other ideas or suggestions? All the other ducks seem fine.

Could be or she was being over bred. I have had a duck with it I believe and a chicken at one time. I separated the duck, kept it warm and calm, put vitamins in the water and favorite food. It took a few days before it finally recovered. Chicken also with supportive care. If she does not start eating in 2 days then I would start to worry and try to put food in her mouth or tube her, but now let her rest. She may have been over bred also, and could take some time. I had a little call duck hen that happened too, it took about 2 weeks of rest before she could walk normally again. She lived in a laundry basket in my garage, and every day her friends came in an visited until one day she was strong enough to join them... Best Wishes..

That very well may be the problem, chickenzoo. Hard to tell at this point. If i can get her through to tomorrow i can take her to the vet, if she is still looking off. It strikes me as odd that at first her legs were straight back and she couldn't move them. Then after bringing her inside she stood up and was looking better. Now back down and not able to stand. Her legs aren't straight back, but i tried to lift her up on them and she went right back down.

i just found her standing up in her bin and a very soft-shelled egg in with her. That must have been the problem. Probably didn't help to have Mr. Lucky mating her when she was having a hard time laying. i'm so glad she's okay. Will probably keep her inside until at least tomorrow and make sure she continues to improve. Thanks so much for your advice Chickenzoo.
