Okay runner enthusiasts,

I ordered some ducklings from Metzer and they are on their way, will be here the 11th. I had ordered a few breeds but stayed away from runners because I've heard they are nervous and excitable. Also, they look like goofy dinosaurs, haha. There was a mixup with the hatch days, and they didn't end up hatching any Blue Swedish ducks today, so I had to substitute that one for a fawn and white runner. It's will be surrounded by two cayugas, two WH's, a buff, a pekin and a mallard, so it's gonna be one funny looking tall duck in the middle of the flock. I hope that won't be a problem, like the runner being singled out and picked on or anything. I'm gonna try and tame these ducklings up as much as possible, but I'm worried a runner might not tame as well, and get the rest of the flock nervous. Anyone out there have some friendly runners? Is there any hope for me, lol? I don't forsee it being TOO much of a problem, but any info would be appreciated.

See my avatar? That's Elfie. She is a very sweet, friendly, even sometimes huggy duck.

None of my Runners are nervous or excitable. They are all high energy compared to my Buffs, but there is a difference to me between energetic and nervous.

Zwei is the same. I even get hugs from Zehn and Sieben sometimes. Sechs and Fünf are always right close to me. Einz watches me calmly from wherever she is standing. Vier tries to boss me around, stomping her feet and trotting toward me, then just watching my face as I lean toward her and sweet-talk her.

I love the German names.

Mine all came from Metzer and I would have to say my fawn and white runner was a sub for a cayuga. I was really disappointed but she has turned out to be the treat hound and will leave the others in the dust and come running when I call them. She LOVES food and is a tiny little thing. She ended up eating my younger sons watermelon while he was trying to get it in his mouth. She also took his pizza from him when we were out side last week. My other runner is a blue and she is pretty large but super sweet as well. She was always the most inquisitive and alert from the get go. My white layer is also very friendly and doesn't mind being picked up while my welsh harlequin is the least friendly, go figure! I think you will be quite happy with your runner. I love all of mine and would order again from them.

Danke. I know just a handful of words in German. And the numbers sound so sweet, with eleven ducklings to name, that was my coping method.

And some are perfect - Elf, 11, is the smallest. Zehn 10 is nutty, Acht 8 has always been the loudest, Sieben 7 is unique and special. And so on. The Buffs already had names when I adopted them.

Oh, one of my Deutsch phrases for the ducks - essen die Schnecke
(eat the slug)
