*~*Runner Duck Club*~*

Don't worry. The babies will be astoundingly gorgeous, because, by definition, Runner babies are astoundingly gorgeous.

What happens when you cross runners of 2 different colors? I have a Fawn and white female and a chocolate Drake....they are bonded, I would hate to separate them....will the babies just be funny colored?
Fawn and white: Runner, Brown, double Blue
Chocolate: Extended black, brown.

Babies: Single extended black, brown, single blue, single runner.
They should be lavender colored (In other words - chocolate with one blue dilution) and with no runner markings. They may have white neck rings or small spots. All your babies will be of similar colors, no matter how many you breed.

Now if you breed those babies together to create a second generation, the results will be quite different. You will then get a huge rainbow of shades of brown duck. Some may be chocolate, lavender or lilac. A few will not have the black gene, and may be various shades of brown (similar to penciled, blue penciled and fawn and white - but without white markings). If you breed enough babies, about 1/4 will have runner markings. These runner marked ducks can carry the black gene (chocolate, lavender or lilac) or not carry it (penciled, blue penciled or fawn and white). Now that will be fun!!!

That's the genetic theory, anyway. Post pictures!

@Wobbles they are so adorable I cannot hardly imagine I have 15 Runner eggs cooking under 3 Muscovy's right now. So excited!!!
This will make it sooo much easier to wait (no it won't). How much longer do you have? It is a random video I saw when I was deciding if I wanted runners or not. It really captures the action I call stompy-stompy-stomp, which is the vertical pumping of the legs WAY more than is required to move. I absolutely love that about runners.

If this video came from a member here, thank you very much. It definitely helped sway our decision toward getting Runners.

I got three Indian runners on Saturday morning but one of them has a hard time standing up straight. He is a little slower than the rest but can walk alright. There are no physical problems I can see on the outside, any ideas of what might be wrong?

Edited now that I have access to my files . . . .

Response for ducklings with likely niacin deficiency
People often get confused about what to use, so please stick with me here .

You have some options.

I would go with brewer's yeast. Forgive me for using capital letters, but for anyone else who may casually look over this thread, NOT baking yeast, NOT winemaking yeast. Brewer's yeast is a nutritional supplement and it provides niacin and a few other vitamins.

Generally, folks who supplement with brewer’s yeast use a tablespoon per cup of food.

Ducklings need about three times the niacin chicks do. And some ducklings get leg problems or seizures if they don't have enough niacin.

If you cannot find the brewer's yeast, or if you happen to have (here come the capital letters again, please forgive me) PLAIN niacin - NOT no-flush, NOT timed release, then dissolve 150 mg niacin per gallon of water for the duckling’s drinking water.

Another approach is to use B Complex capsules, and use the B3 - niacin - levels as a guide. Again, 150 mg B3 per gallon of drinking water.

Keep the little one on the supplements for about 8 weeks.

Sometimes it only takes a few days to see improvement.

You can also see how it went for Qwackers and Bentley from these threads.

As I wrote before, it is also possible something else is going on, like an infection.
