Runner Duck Hatch-a-Long! 2021

Pics
I’m so excited for your! Nothing cuter than ducklings, please keep us updated! 10 days for me. I picked up some day old chicks this week and am waiting for the weather to warm up to move my 6 week chickens to the outside coop, the three wheelers to the big brooder and the day olds to the midsize to make room for the ducks. I’m in Canada (Eastern Ontario) so in March we can get snow one day and super hot the next! Hopefully it stabilizes soon. We put a space heater in the coop so hopefully by next week I can move by big guys out (they’ll be 7 weeks next week).

ooo what kind of ducklings?

also question: this is my first hatch and one of my 6 hour old ducklings is like sneezing a bit. its more like clearing the nose bc there's no sneezing movement but maybe they're too fragile to truly "sneeze" yet... anyways... Is this normal??

They're just getting the liquid out of their lungs. It should fully stop in a couple days. 😊

How are the rest doing? Did they hatch?
Out of 10 eggs: 10 were fertile and made it to lockdown. I have 4 hatched already. Of the 6 unhatched: 1 JUST Died in Shell (malpositioned with head twisted and at feet, pipped into embryonic waste part of shell and/or yolk aspirated and died in membrane) and I am waiting on 5 [1 is only one day overdue (it was a day late addition to the first batch) and the rest were due today but are all absorbing their veins and whatnot].

Both my incubators were pretty terrible and stability of temp so I've had to assist all hatches. Of the four that have hatch, just one is a runt whom I am watching very carefully! *Sigh* looks like writing my thesis will have to wait lol this has taken all of my attention this weekend! But I'm grateful for the 4 that have hatched and hope all the chicks left can hang in there!! Especially the fourth runt 🥺 he's so tiny my heart will break if anything happens!

When you have an duckling quit do you open the egg and check it out? I had another quit on day 20. I haven’t been able to look at any of my previous quitters but I wonder if I should be. I think I’m most nervous about it not being dead, even though I am quite certain it is. I still have 8 going strong, the one that quit was progressing well, I hadn’t noted anything unusual along the way.

My fingers are crossed for the fourth little guy! I hope he hangs in there!

Sorry for the one you lost as well. It's always sad.

I assisted with one of my ducklings hatching last year. Took such a long time for her to come out and she was smaller than all the other ducklings. Very worn out for a few days. But now she is full grown and runs around outside with all the others and just started laying eggs.
I hope for this for your little one!
