Runner ducks, tell me about them!

But it's very important to get a BIG girl for a muscovy drake - for her sake. Usually you would want at least three girls for one drake, and with a large drake like a muscovy you may have an injured duck if you don't get one of the largest. Pekins and Roans are not too hard to find, the Roens often aren't quite as large as the Pekins.

That's from going the Dallas/Ft. Worth Craigs list but I just came accross this one:

Made me wonder about getting a female goose just for the sake of size. Does that sound absolutely crazy. I mean this drake already thinks he's a human, if he is gonna make the shift maybe a nice big goose would be just as appropriate, especially since he can only have one girl? I wonder how that would work out? I have read of happy duck/goose couples but maybe they were raised together.
Anyway I didn't list all the ducks I found because the list kept going on and on, but you can follow up with that if you like.

I LOVE my Runner(s)!

I had 2. One was killed. The remaining one was very very sad. She was calling out to her friend for several days afterwards.

I gave extra attention because of it. I brought her inside and she would sit in a laundry basket and watch tv with us, or sit next to me while I work on signs.

I finally did get her a friend, a female call duck who is very wild. (I'm hoping to tame her though.)

My runner is like a different animal after that extra attention now. She loves her buddy, but now she will actually let me pet her, something she never did before.

She's a spoiled duck now. She quacks her head off when she needs anything. lol

The 2 runners were so much fun to watch run around the yard.

I saw my first muscovy drake yesterday. OMG they are huge. There's no way I would keep one of those with only one poor runner hen. I love my runners too much. I like the female goose idea. If he can only have one female companion, she would be able to mostly take care of herself. There is a lightweight geese class that include chinese and romans (which is what I have). And wow, Dances with Ducks found a lot of ducks for you to look at too!

Good luck let us know what you decide.

Okay, so I guess the Runner idea has been voted down.

I'm glad folks were able to chip in on that, as it kind of worried me too. I would hesitate about a goose, though, unless you can raise her from a gosling, because geese can be very aggressive, and no matter how attached he might get to her, she might never return the affection. Then you've got two large, unhappy waterfowl on your hands.

I do like the idea of a rouen or jumbo pekin (although the jumbos are prone to leg problems due to their weight--they are bred mostly for meat, so health is secondary). Have you tried advertising on craigslist? In the end, you might just have to raise another duckling--maybe your big guy can help.

It makes me sad though

I think they have to be the most beautiful species of domestic duck. But, I know that he will hurt her. I weigh A LOT more than him and he even hurts me. Since he's convinced that my legs are his girlfriends.
I was actually considering a pekin. The only reason I haven't considered a goose is because they're loud. That would definately get me a fine. And the fines here aren't pretty. I looked them up. Plus everyone on my block knows I have a duck. I don't want to push it.
I'm not gunna lie, I would love to have a goose more than anything

I just don't want another unhappy fowl on my hands though

I don't want another scovy though. The personality I admit is wonderful, but the caruncles aren't all that cute.
Geese are a lot louder than ducks. I actually got to live on a farm with calls, scovies, canadian geese, and brown chinese, the geese were so loud. The ducks were actually the quietest ones. The calls even outnumbered the geese. Nd there were only 4 scovies. Well 5 including my duck but he didn't really fit in with everybody. He had to sleep with the doggies in a cage or the coyotes or foxes would get him in his sleep. If not that then his fussy daddy
