He began to slowly move forward, setting his paws down lightly while making sure he didn't step on dead leaves, twigs or anything that would make noise. He also made sure his tail stayed still and didn't brush the ground as he crept forward. Why is she teaching me this? Doesn't she know I had to teach this to myself when I was a loner...? He wondered with a flick of his ear

Snowfrost could guess what he was thinking. She knew he was capable of much more than a new apprentice normally was, but she had to assess him on the basics so she knew how far ahead she could jump in his training. She nodded again in approval and flicked her tail to indicate the pine cone she wanted him to pounce on.

He judged the distance, then pounced. He landed squarely on top of it and raised his head proudly, clutching the pine cone in his jaws

“Well done!” she purred. “I think you’ve got it. I want you to catch as much as you can near Tallpines and be back by sundown. I will be checking your progress, but hiding. Good luck.”

With a flick of his tail, he disappeared into the forest and began to hunt. This feels like an assessment. He mused as his claws sunk into the body of an unsuspecting mouse

She slipped silently through the undergrowth, watching in approval as Beetlepaw met his first catch.

He buried it next to a tree and then continued his hunt. He stood up on his hind legs, getting taller, so he could see and hear more around himself. Once he located a rabbit. he began to stalk towards it. When he got a cat-length away, he sniffed around until he was certain of Snowfrosts position. Lets see how she does with some team hunting! he thought as he adjusted his position so that when he ran toward it, it would run straight into her claws. He dashed forward, and with a jolt of alarm, the rabbit fled directly into Snowfrost

Snowfrost lashes out a paw and have the rabbit a killing blow to the head. “Well done,” she purred. “That was smart. I could’ve done better to hide myself though,” she added, flicking her ears in amusement. “Oh well, I’m learning too, I suppose.” They continued to hunt until sundown, at which point Snowfrost told Beetlepaw they would head back to camp.
