I could’ve done better to hide myself though,” she added, flicking her ears in amusement. “Oh well, I’m learning too, I suppose.” They continued to hunt until sundown, at which point Snowfrost told Beetlepaw they would head back to camp.

He purred in amusement.

By the end of it, they had a good amount of prey and both of their jaws were full as they walked back to camp. His tail twitched proudly as he walked into camp and set his jaw-full on the pile

Snowfrost’s eyes sparkled as she set down her mouthful of prey and went to report Beetlepaw’s progress to Bramblestar.

Snowfrost dipped her head respectfully as she entered the den. “Beetlepaw is doing very well,” she reported. “His hunter’s crouch and stalking is amazing. He managed to catch more than half of what’s on the fresh-kill pile.”

His whiskers twitched in surprise. "Interesting... I guess he learned a lot more on his own than we originally thought. I wonder how long he had to fend for himself before he joined us..."

“That’s what I’m wondering too. However long it was, I suppose he was forced to learn these things pretty quickly if he was to survive. Being a kit and alone in the woods isn’t easy.” A sudden sharp pain pierced her heart at the thought of an innocent kit left to fend for itself in the unforgiving forest.

“I’m not sure of that quote yet,” she said thoughtfully. “After all, being a warrior is more than about what you’re capable of physically. It’s about your loyalty and strength of spirit. When I know Beetlepaw is as talented in those things as he is hunting and fighting, I’ll talk to you about making him a warrior.” But will he ever truly know loyalty, if he trains with the Dark Forest? a voice in the back of her head said. No, she answered herself firmly. I said I would let him make his own decisions, and I meant it. What good is loyalty if it has to be forced? If Beetlepaw truly understands the warrior code, he will make the choice to leave on his own.
