Duckkit and Copperkit jumped on Blackpaw. “You never wanted to play with us! Will you play with us?” They said in a scary unison. Then they started to tackle Blackpaw.

A purr, soft as the beating of a butterfly's wings, fluttered from Lark. She collapsed next to him on the camp floor, and watched the small kits swarm him.

Floodkit lifted a small paw and asked Lark, “Where’s your mama? Is she coming to?” She saw sadness there and pressed to Lark. “It’s okay.”

Flamefrost blinked back surprise as the usually uneasy and introverted young apprentice played with them. She purred happily at the sight.


Duckkit jumped on his tail and told Copperkit to get his paw.
