Lark dashed to the edge of the thunderpath and crashed onto the foul dead grass that lay beside it just as a great monster roared by. Her small, skinny frame trembled and her heart was beating so fast that she thought her chest would explode. She lay there like that for a few moments, then got up to her shaky paws. The twoleg dogs that had been chasing her hadn't dared cross the thunderpath, and stood on the other side howling and barking with their twoleg owners yelping at them from farther away.
Lark sighed. She looked to be at the edge of a large forest. Sniffing the air, Lark distantly smelled other cats. She flinched as another monster raced past, then tentatively stepped into the forest. Whatever threats lay in the woods surely weren't as great as the threat of the thunderpath.
