I have a runt. He is a black chickie, not exactly sure what breed. But he is about a month old and is half the size of the other 9 chicks. He likes to eat the little pieces of corn i give him but he always gets it taken out of her mouth before she can swallow. I took her out where she can eat by himself and he ate some corn. I'm pretty sure he is eating and positive he's drinking. What should I do? Is he going to be alright? Any ideas would be great.

Hoping he'll be alright!

I had a runt in my last batch of chicks this last spring. She just wasn't growing. Other birds were feathering and there she was small, still with her downy fluff and seemingly weak. I bought her replacement thinking she wouldn't live overnight. She's alive and well -still the runt. She's the reason I have a bakers dozen chickens instead of 12. She's my lucky 13! Her name is Nugget. I know who is laying the midget size eggs!

I like her name

How did you come up with it. I had a chicken that would barely see. We called he Missy. Unfortunately, she was taken by a fox

So you think he'll be alright?

OH don't worry about the fox He got hit by a car at the bottom of my driveway!

He deserved it! I'll get a pic tomorrow evening. Hoing to be gone most of the morn and some of the afternoon. It should be up 5:00 my time(Wisconsin). I'm also wondering what breed he is. he is black and has feather on his feet. I don't really care if you don't know, just knowing that he has a chance makes my DAY

I'm willing to bet the little fella gets along fine with the other chicks. Among chicks, size isn't a factor. He'll grow along with the others only smaller. My chicks didn't treat Nugget any differently. I'm no expert but should a 4 wk old chik be eating corn? I'd think he'd do well on chick starter and other birds can't get that from his beak before its swallowed.

I only give him a fourth of a piece of corn and he does get chick starter. You're probably right about the starter. Thanks

I have a runt too.

Here she is at about 5 months. She hatched in April and I took this photo last week. She's a barred rock/EE mix.

Here's a week or two before.

She's the size of my bantam d'uccle. I have no idea if she will lay eggs or not, she is a very slow developer and is just having a voice change and sounding like a goose. I do believe at 5 months they are full size.
